New York, NY - May 2007. Soho Photo Gallery is pleased to present Aquarius, the gallery's second solo exhibit of works by photographer Amadou Diallo. This series of images is inspired by Chinese landscape paintings of the 10th–13th centuries; works in which an economy of brush strokes expresses nature’s infinite profundity. As Diallo writes, "When photographing these seascapes I use long exposure times to create a sense of motion and frame the compositions to eliminate visual clues, enabling natural elements to exist within a new context. Completing the reference to East Asian art, I print the images on a kozo (mulberry) paper from Japan that has a translucence and unique absorption of ink which convey a sense of subtle delicacy, contributing to a finished image that references traditions of photography, painting, and printmaking. I invite the viewer to reconcile both abstract and representational forms into a personal narrative that transcends time and place."
Diallo will also be presenting an Artist Talk in which he discusses the aesthetic and technical aspects of his photography as well as an overview of some of the digital imaging processes used to produce his work. Admission is free and seating is available on a first-come first-serve basis.
The Gallery is in New York City's historic TriBeCa district, 3 blocks south
of Canal Street, between West Broadway and Sixth Avenue. Subways:
Number 1 to Franklin Street; A, C, E, N or R to Canal Street.

Soho Photo Gallery Presents Still
Life: Botanica
By Amadou Diallo
For Immediate Release
Exhibit dates: April 2 - May 4, 2002
Opening Reception: Tuesday, April 2, from 6-8 pm
Gallery hours: Thursday, 6-8 pm; Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
1-6 pm
New York, NY - February 2002. Originally from Baltimore,
MD, and a jazz saxophonist and composer, Amadou Diallo is
a young photographer with an exciting vision.
Still Life: Botanica, an exhibit of twelve large floral images,
is part of an ongoing work exploring the interaction of light,
texture and contrast in creating organic portraits. Floral
studies, no stranger to the photographic medium, have a long
history of stylized romanticism. "My challenge is to
present neither pictorialist jewels nor clinical autopsies,
but to go beyond physical reality and create a portrait,"
comments Diallo. "I hope to present the viewer with the
uniqueness and individuality of subjects too frequently interpreted
as metaphors of idealized beauty."
The Gallery is in New York City's historic TriBeCa district,
3 blocks south
of Canal Street, between West Broadway and Sixth Avenue. Subways:
Number 1 to Franklin Street; A, C, E, N or R to Canal Street.
